Amid the tumultuous Irish War of Independence, a new form of collective protest emerged through color lithographs. The Illustrated London News chronicled the murder of an English army officer by Sinn Fein, sparking international outrage (December 11, 1920). In Belfast, a reign of terror unfolded, depicted in another chilling litho. Yet, amidst the chaos, the Irish rebels continued to defy the British with audacious feats. In the heart of London, Irish men, women, and children knelt in Downing Street, pleading for peace during the Anglo-Irish Treaty meetings of 1921. The Treaty brought a tenuous calm, but the price was high. Bloody Sunday, 1920, left a lasting scar, as depicted in a heart-wrenching lithograph of a wounded British cadet and the three men accused. Amidst it all, King George V made a heartfelt appeal for peace in the City Hall.
