James Brindley (1716-1772): A Pioneering 18th-century English Civil Engineer and Canal Builder Whose Vision Transformed the Landscape. Depicted in multiple engravings, Brindley's masterpiece, the Bridgewater Canal, spans the River Irwell via the Barton aqueduct, a marvel of engineering feat. His Five Rise Locks, a series of locks on the canal, are still in use today. Artist JT Wedgwood captured Brindley's brilliance in this 1836 engraving, while Robert Pollard immortalized a barge crossing the Barton aqueduct in 1794. Brindley's legacy continues to inspire innovation and progress in engineering and transportation.
