Keir Hardie: The Pioneering Scottish Labour Champion (1856-1915) Keir Hardie, a Scottish-born trade unionist and Labour politician, is remembered as a pivotal figure in the early Labour Party. In 1893, he founded the Scottish Labour Party, which later merged with the English Labour Representation Committee to form the Labour Party in 1906. Hardie's oratory skills were legendary, and he is depicted here addressing various crowds during significant moments in Labour history. In this image from 1906, he speaks at the first Women's Suffrage demonstration in London. Another photograph shows him at the first Parliamentary Labour Party gathering. Hardie's commitment to peace was also noteworthy. He is seen here delivering a speech at a peace rally in Trafalgar Square on 2nd August, 1914, just days before the outbreak of World War I. His pleas for peace went unheeded, but his legacy as a champion of the working class and a voice for the disenfranchised endures. This black and white photograph captures Hardie at home, offering a glimpse into the personal life of the man behind the political figure. Despite the challenges of his time, Hardie's unwavering dedication to social justice continues to inspire generations.
