The killdeer, scientifically known as Charadrius vociferus ternominatus, is a fascinating bird species that can be found in various locations across the United States and Cuba. With its distinctive appearance and interesting behaviors, the killdeer never fails to capture our attention. In Picture No. 10756736, we see an adult killdeer standing gracefully on short grass in Zapata Peninsula, Matanzas Province, Cuba. Its slender body and long legs are perfectly adapted for life on land. This particular habitat provides ample opportunities for the bird to search for insects and small crustaceans. Moving on to Picture No. 10982754, we witness another striking moment of a killdeer's life. Standing in shallow water in Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus Province, this adult killdeer calls out with its characteristic vocalizations. These loud cries serve multiple purposes - from attracting mates to warning others about potential threats. But it's not just their presence on land or near water that makes them captivating; they are also skilled flyers as shown in Picture No. (Picture No. ) where an adult killdeer soars through the skies above Klamath National Wildlife Refuge in California or Lake Kissimmee in Florida (Picture No. ). Their swift flight allows them to cover vast distances during migration seasons or escape from predators when necessary. Interestingly enough, these birds have unique nesting habits too. In one of the pictures mentioned above (Killdeer - On nest with eggs), we observe a dedicated parent protecting its precious clutch of eggs by feigning injury – pretending to have a broken wing or leg – luring intruders away from the nest site (Killdeer - On nest with eggs). It's truly remarkable how far they would go to ensure their offspring's safety.
