Kurland, a historic region in the Baltic Sea once ruled by the Teutonic Order (1525), is rich in artistic and royal heritage. Notable figures include Maria Amalia, Princess and Countess (1653-1711), whose oil canvas painting captures her regal beauty. In 1677, Maria Amalia married Karl, Count Hessen-Kassel, but the region's rulers were not limited to the fairer sex.
