Amidst the Gold Fever of the 1850s, licenses became essential for prospectors in California and Australia, as seen in this engraving of the Turon Gold Diggings. Fast forward to the early 20th century, and licenses took on a new meaning with the issuance of chauffeur's permits, as depicted in this lithograph of Jewish chauffeurs lining up in Tel Aviv. During times of war, such as the onset of World War One in England, they were also required for marriage, adding an extra layer of bureaucracy to the already chaotic scene. And so, the importance continued to evolve, reflecting the changing times and societal needs.
