The majestic Maja squinado, also known as the spiny spider crab, can be found in various locations across Europe. From the seabed of the Channel Islands to the shores of St. Ives in Cornwall, these European spider crabs gather together in impressive aggregations during August. With their distinctive appearance and intricate patterns, it's hard not to be captivated by these creatures. Whether you come across them lithographed or photographed, the beauty of the Maja squinado is undeniable. Their spiky exoskeletons provide protection while blending seamlessly with their surroundings. In places like Sark in the British Channel Islands or Malta in the Mediterranean, they can be seen perched on rocks covered with vibrant red algae or nestled among seaweed. These fascinating creatures are not alone in their habitats; sometimes they share space with other marine life. A pair of Maja brachydactyla/squinado can often be spotted on a rock adorned with red algae. They may even find themselves alongside smaller Fiddler crabs (Uca sp. ), creating an interesting contrast from above. One particularly remarkable sight is witnessing an aggregation of spider crabs off Burton Bradstock in Dorset. These shallow waters become a temporary home for numerous Maja squinado individuals who congregate together for reasons still unknown to us.
