"Malfaiteur: A Glimpse into the Dark Side of Humanity" In a world where justice takes on various forms, the malfaiteur, or criminal, finds themselves entangled in a web of punishment and retribution. From ancient times to the 19th century, their deeds have been immortalized in art and literature, shedding light on society's struggle to maintain order. A parricide condemned to crucifixion leads us through the gates of torture within prison walls. The sentences still applied behind those bars serve as a chilling reminder of the consequences that await those who commit heinous acts. But for great criminals like arsonists and murderers, their fate lies in public execution grounds; an ominous spectacle witnessed by all. La Fontaine's fables bring forth "The Theft and the Donkey, " reminding us that even animals can be accomplices to crime. Engraved illustrations from this 19th-century masterpiece transport us back in time when morality tales were used to teach valuable lessons. Giovanni Boccaccio's "Decameron" reveals a murder scene where two men meet their gruesome end with severed heads. This French manuscript illuminated by the Master of Mansel captures both horror and fascination with death during medieval times. Pierre Patel's painting depicts Moses burying an Egyptian whom he had killed out of anger for striking a Hebrew. This biblical tale showcases how violence begets violence throughout history. Ancient Rome comes alive through colored engravings showing criminals being attacked by wild animals - a brutal form of punishment meant to deter others from following their path. From China comes another glimpse into cruelty as criminals are subjected to the torture of cangue while being fed by their own wives. Gilbert's drawing illustrates M. De Bourboulon's journey from Shanghai to Moscow in the mid-19th century, highlighting cultural practices that shock our modern sensibilities.
