Born in Laboremus, Mexico, in 1832, General Tomas Mejia rose through the ranks to become a trusted commander under Emperor Maximilian I of Mexico, who was also an Archduke of Austria. Together with General Miguel Gregorio de la Luz Atenogenes Miramon y Tarelo, they led the Mexican forces against the rebellion led by Benito Juarez. In 1867, after the fall of Queretaro, Maximilian and his generals, including Mejia and Miramon, were captured and sentenced to death. The tragic end came on June 19, 1867, when they were executed by firing squad on Cerro de las Campanas. The painting depicts this fateful moment in Mexican history, with Mejia and Miramon standing bravely before their executioners.
