Mounted infantry, a versatile and formidable force, has played a significant role in various historical events. From the Nile Expedition for the Relief of General Gordon to the Farewell Review before H. R. H. The Duke of Connaught at Quetta, their presence was felt across continents. In 1890, during The 5th Bombay Native's farewell review in Victoria, Australia, a company of Mounted Rifles showcased their maneuvering skills. This display highlighted the importance of these troops in our colonial defenses. Across borders and timezones, men from different regiments gathered at Aldershot in 1888 for drill practice. These mounted infantry soldiers honed their skills under unknown creators' guidance as they prepared for future battles. During The Melbourne Centennial International Exhibition, an escort accompanied the Governor to the exhibition grounds. Their disciplined formation and unwavering dedication were admired by all who witnessed this grand procession. One engraving captured a pivotal moment: The Revolt in Transvaal and Sir G. P Colley's attack on Laings Nek on January 28th, 1881. It depicted brave mounted infantry charging into battle against fierce opposition—a testament to their courage amidst adversity. As conflicts erupted worldwide, Australian Mounted Rifles ventured into South Africa in both black-and-white photographs and stereoscopic images from 1899. These snapshots immortalized their bravery while serving far away from home. Our first advance into enemy territory saw colonial troops surprising Boers at Lubbes Hoop Farm—an event commemorated through lithographs that vividly portrayed mounted infantry's strategic prowess during warfare. Not only did mounted infantry excel on battlegrounds but also played crucial roles beyond combat scenarios—such as bringing dacoits to justice around c. 1890—as seen in captivating black-and-white photos capturing these moments forever. From expeditions along The Nile River to army maneuvers on Salisbury Plain—their adaptability shone through diverse terrains and situations.
