Nicholas Alexandrovich Romanov, the future Tsar of Russia (1843-1865), was a young grand duke filled with determination and courage. In 1891, he was seen off from Kansk with great enthusiasm by the local population. Two years later, he bravely intervened in the Buryat uprising, known as "The Fight of the Buryats," demonstrating his leadership skills. His portraits from various artists during his youth capture his regal presence and maturing character. From Hau (Gau)'s watercolor in the late 1840s to Tyurin's and Rockstuhl's portraits in the 1860s, each artist portrays the future Tsar's strong and resolute demeanor.
