The Asian Open-billed Stork, also known as Anastomus oscitans, is a magnificent bird found in Sri Lanka. In February, these adult storks can be seen foraging on mud in lakes or standing on branches in trees while preening their feathers. Their graceful flight over the lake is truly mesmerizing. Meanwhile, the African Open-billed Stork (Anastomus lamelligerus) showcases its beauty along the Chobe River and Godikwe Lagoon in Botswana. These adults are often spotted standing on mounds of vegetation or silhouetted against the sunset while soaring through the sky. In addition to their stunning appearances, these storks display impressive hunting skills. The Asian Open-billed Stork can be observed foraging at the edge of ponds and water bodies, searching for food such as shellfish to feed upon. Similarly, their African counterparts are frequently seen with shellfish clutched tightly in their beaks as they feast in wetlands. These storks also prioritize family life. The African Open-billed Stork's young ones reside within nests nestled high up in trees near Godikwe Lagoon. It's heartwarming to witness them growing under parental care amidst such natural splendor.
