The Oriolus, also known as the Baltimore oriole (Icterus galbula) or Oriolus baltimore, is a stunning bird that captivates with its vibrant colors and melodious songs. This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Matilda Hayes showcases the beauty of this species, taken from William Hayes' Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds from the Menagery of Osterly Park. While often confused with the Oriole blackbird (Gymnomystax mexicanus), the Baltimore oriole stands out with its distinct orange plumage and contrasting black markings. Its presence brings joy to birdwatchers as it flits through trees in search of insects and nectar. Inhabiting saltmarshes, we find another intriguing member of the oriole family - the Saltmarsh sparrow (Ammodramus caudacutus). Unfortunately, this species is vulnerable due to habitat loss and climate change. Conservation efforts are crucial to protect these delicate birds for future generations. Venturing into tropical regions, we encounter the White-shouldered tanager (Tachyphonus luctuosus), adorned with striking red plumage on its head and wings. Its lively presence adds a splash of color to lush rainforests. Traveling across continents, we discover the African golden oriole (Oriolus auratus), showcasing a brilliant yellow hue against dark feathers. The Black oriole (green oriole) catches our attention too; its unique four-horned spider-like appearance sets it apart from other members of its family. Amongst Passeres like Cuckoos and Birds of Paradise lies an enchanting creature depicted in a colorful lithograph - Golden Oriole. Morris's artwork captures every intricate detail that makes this bird truly mesmerizing. Eggs play an essential role in avian life cycles.
