Otto I, also known as Otto the Great, was a prominent figure in European history during the late 10th century. Born in 1848 and serving as King of Bavaria from 1886 to 1913, he left an indelible mark on both German and Italian territories. One of his significant achievements was defeating the Magyars at the Battle of Lechfeld in 955. This victory solidified his position as a formidable ruler and brought stability to Germany. Otto's military prowess extended beyond his own borders when he invaded Italy in 951, asserting himself as Holy Roman Emperor. Throughout his reign, Otto I displayed a strong connection with religion. He sought divine intervention and protection by being crowned by the Virgin Mary herself, depicted beautifully in an engraving from the Sacramentary of Bishop Warmondo. His devotion is further highlighted by another engraving showing him on the shores of the North Sea. Family played a crucial role for Otto I; he married St Adelaide of Italy as his second wife after her previous marriage to Holy Roman Emperor Otto the Great ended. Their union symbolized unity between two powerful dynasties. The legacy of this great ruler lives on through various artistic depictions such as statues at Magdeburg Cathedral called The Royal Couple thought to portray King Otto I and his wife Edith of England. Otto's influence even reached Greece where he became king for some time before returning to Germany.
