The pendentive is a remarkable architectural feature that can be found in various historical sites, such as the Great Hall ceiling of Castle Howard in North Yorkshire. This detail, captured in a black and white photo from Jeremy Musson's book "The Country Houses of Sir John Vanbrugh, " showcases the intricate design and craftsmanship involved. Intriguingly, this captivating element is not limited to architecture alone. In fact, it has also been depicted in stunning frescoes dating back to 1517-18. One such fresco portrays Venus instructing Cupid to launch an arrow, while another shows Psyche alongside Venus and Juno. The imagery continues with Venus on a cart pulled by white doves and Jupiter consoling Cupid. These frescoes tell tales of mythical characters like Psyche coming back from the underworld carried by cupids or submitting an urn containing Proserpine's beauty to Venus. Mercurius and Psyche are also portrayed together, as well as Venus with Jupiter. Additionally, there is a depiction of Cupid surrounded by the Graces. Moving beyond mythology, other frescoes featuring sibyls can be found from 1623-34. These include the Tiburtine sibyl and Phrygian sibyl among others.
