"Power and Alliance: The Meeting of Pepin the Brief and Pope Stephen II in 754" In a historic encounter on June 1, 754, King Pepin the Brief of the Franks met with Pope Stephen II at Ponthion near Vitry-le-Francois. This pivotal meeting would shape the course of history as it led to a significant donation by Pepin. Dressed regally in a crown, adorned cape with a golden buckle border, and a vibrant green tunic, Pepin exuded authority. Holding a fleur de lys sceptre and clutching a tablet embellished with jeweled crosses, he sat upon his majestic throne adorned with lion heads. A portrait painted by Louis Felix Amiel in 1837 captures this momentous king's essence. The painting showcases Pepin III known as "Pepin the Brief, " who reigned from 714 to 768. His image stands tall and proud against an intricate backdrop. During this period, Griffon (Grippon), one of his brothers, played an important role. From around 726 to 753, Griffon supported his sibling's endeavors diligently. The meeting between these two influential figures marked more than just an alliance; it resulted in significant political developments for France. Childeric III was dethroned during this time and confined to monastery life under Pepin's reign. Engravings from the nineteenth century depict scenes depicting battles fought by Pepin against formidable opponents such as lions or bulls—a testament to his bravery and strength on the battlefield. Furthermore, another crucial aspect of Pepin's life was his marriage to Bertrade of Laon (also known as Berthe aux grand pieds). Their union solidified alliances within Carolingian circles—an essential factor for maintaining power during those times. On July 28th that same year—754—the sacred ceremony took place at Saint Denis Abbey where Pope Stephen II anointed Pepin as the rightful King of the Franks.
