Philip IV, also known as Philip the Fair, was a powerful and influential ruler of France during the 13th and 14th centuries. His reign was marked by significant political and military events that shaped the course of European history. One notable depiction is seen in Plate 35, where he is portrayed as Neptune, riding in a magnificent chariot drawn by two sea horses. This image symbolizes his authority over the seas and his ambition to expand French influence beyond its borders. Another significant event during Philip's reign was the execution of Enguerrand de Marigny, his trusted minister. The engraving depicting this grim scene at the Gibbet of Montfaucon in 1315 showcases Philip's determination to maintain control and eliminate any threats to his power. The Reapers War of 1640-52 saw King Philip IV leading troops in besieging Barcelona. This conflict highlighted both his military prowess and his willingness to assert dominance over territories outside France. A momentous meeting between Kings Philip IV and Louis XIV took place on Pheasant Island, captured beautifully in an oil painting on copper. This encounter signifies the passing of power from one generation to another as well as diplomatic relations between kingdoms. French kings and queens from the 13th and 14th centuries are depicted together in a colored engraving, showcasing their lineage under which Philip IV played a pivotal role. It highlights how he continued a legacy established by previous monarchs while leaving behind his own mark on history. Philip's death is commemorated in Fr 6465 f. 323 with an illustration showing his burial at St. Denis alongside other important figures from French history who were laid to rest there. This solemn scene reflects not only mourning for him but also recognition of his significance within French society. Under Philippe le Bel (1268-1312), administration responsibilities were delegated through State Tiers - an administrative structure that helped govern the kingdom.
