The porcupine caribou, also known as Rangifer tarandus, is a majestic creature that roams across various regions of the world. From Salla in Lapland, Finland to Denali National Park in Alaska, these domesticated reindeer are truly a sight to behold. In their natural habitat, the caribou herd gracefully moves through the Arctic landscape during springtime. Their black and white digital illustrations capture their beauty and uniqueness. These illustrations often depict them alongside other arctic animals like the Arctic fox, skua, hare, wolf, bison and even wolverines. Surviving in harsh conditions is no easy feat for these resilient creatures and can be seen searching for food in snowy landscapes with ermines chasing brown lemmings nearby. The Svalbard reindeer subspecies - Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus - found near Hyttevika on Spitsbergen Island in Norway showcases their adaptability to extreme environments. However, life isn't always peaceful for these magnificent beings. Illustrations show instances where wolves have hunted down male bull caribous along the shores of Wind River in Canada's Peel Watershed region. These kill sites leave behind haunting reminders of nature's circle of life. Even so, there are heartwarming moments too; such as witnessing a reindeer calf exploring its surroundings under the watchful eye of its mother in Khovsgol Aimag Mongolia. Porcupine caribou embody both strength and vulnerability as they navigate diverse landscapes around the world. Their presence serves as a reminder of nature's intricate balance and our responsibility to protect these remarkable creatures for generations to come.
