Prince Aribert of Anhalt was a controversial figure in German history, known for his extravagant lifestyle and scandalous behavior. Born into royalty in 1866, he was the son of Duke Friedrich I of Anhalt and Princess Antoinette of Saxe-Altenburg. Aribert gained notoriety for his numerous affairs with women, including actress Clara Mathilde von Dehn and opera singer Lina Cavalieri. His lavish spending habits also drew criticism from the public, as he lived a life of luxury while many Germans struggled to make ends meet. Despite his reputation as a playboy prince, Aribert did have some redeeming qualities. He was an avid supporter of the arts and patronized several cultural institutions in Germany. He also served briefly in the Prussian army during World War I. However, his association with the infamous Black Hand Society – a nationalist group responsible for the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand – tarnished his legacy even further. After Germany's defeat in WWI, Aribert went into exile in Switzerland where he lived out the rest of his days until his death in 1933.
