Pufferfishes, also known as blowfish or fugu, are fascinating creatures belonging to the class Actinopterygii. These aquatic animals can be found in various parts of Asia, including Fiji and the Greater Sunda Islands. With their unique appearance and behaviors, pufferfishes never fail to captivate our attention. One remarkable species is the inflated Guineafowl pufferfish (Arothron meleagris), which was spotted on a reef drop off in Fiji. This black-saddled beauty showcases its ability to inflate itself when threatened, creating an impressive defense mechanism. Another striking member of this family is the Black-spotted Puffer (Arothron nigropunctatus). An adult specimen was captured resting gracefully on sand in Manado, Sulawesi. Its distinctive black spots add an extra touch of elegance to its already mesmerizing presence. In Lembeh Straits, Sulawesi, we encounter another Black-spotted Puffer adult. This time we get a close-up view of its head against the contrasting backdrop of black sand. The intricate details become apparent as we admire this creature's unique features up close. The Whitebelly Toby (Canthigaster bennetti) takes us on a swim through Lembeh Straits with its graceful movements. Found in Indonesia's Greater Sunda Islands region, this fish adds a splash of vibrancy with its colorful appearance. However, not all encounters with they can pleasant for them. A Map Pufferfish (Arothron mappa) was unfortunately caught by fishing hook and line between its teeth—a reminder that these beautiful creatures face threats from human activities too. Underneath the cover of darkness in Lembeh Straits resides the Compressed Toby (Canthigaster compressa). Swimming at night adds an air of mystery to this species' behavior as it navigates through the waters surrounding Sulawesi.
