Their dedication ensured that every member of the community had access to sustenance. Thomas Paine, an influential Anglo-American political philosopher and writer in the late 18th century, once proclaimed "Fashion before Ease; or A good Constitution sacrificed for a Fantastic Form. " This English cartoon from 1793 depicted his belief that prioritizing style over substance could lead to detrimental consequences for society.
