Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, commonly known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. Born in 1483 in Urbino, Italy, he is considered one of the greatest artists of all time. His works are characterized by their harmony, balance, and beauty. One of his notable paintings is "Venus and Cupid riding two sea monsters. " In this masterpiece, Cupid raises an arrow in his right hand while Venus gracefully sits on a sea monster's back. The painting showcases Raphael's skillful depiction of movement and emotion. Another famous work by Raphael is "Madonna of the Chair, " housed in the Pitti Palace in Florence. This captivating piece portrays Mary holding baby Jesus with St. John the Baptist looking adoringly at them. It exemplifies Raphael's ability to capture tenderness and maternal love. Raphael also created stunning grotesque paintings for the Vatican loggias in Rome. These intricate designs feature fantastical creatures intertwined with foliage and architectural elements. In addition to his religious subjects, Raphael excelled at portraying mythological scenes like "The Olympian gods at the marriage feast of Cupid and Psyche. " This artwork depicts various gods celebrating Cupid's wedding to Psyche with exquisite detail and vibrant colors. His talent extended beyond painting as seen in his portrait titled "Portrait of Raphael. " This self-portrait showcases his confident gaze and mastery over capturing human likeness. Raphael's legacy lives on through numerous artworks attributed to him such as "Saint George and the Dragon" which tells a heroic tale through dynamic composition; "The Small Cowper Madonna" that exudes serenity; or "Putto with Garland" displaying cherubic innocence. Even after his death at a young age of 37, artists like Marcantonio Raimondi continued to reproduce some of Rafael's iconic works such as "Jupiter embracing Cupid" or "The Three Graces sitting on clouds.
