Little did they know that lurking among them was Virchow, a spy disguised as an innocent bystander. His mission? To gather information on rickets and its devastating effects on society. As he observed a young pygmy African elephant named Oojah fitted with splints to combat his own battle against this affliction, Virchow realized just how far-reaching rickets' grasp truly was. In an attempt to shed light on this silent enemy, Bertelli & C created vivid color lithographs depicting the plight of those suffering from rickets. One such engraving showcased a three-year-old child bearing the burden of this debilitating condition. Another portrayed extreme deformity in the skeleton of a 21-year-old Native American due to rickets – an alarming testament to its destructive nature. Even advertisements were not immune to addressing rickets' impact. Ricketss Ventilating Globe Lights promised relief for sufferers while simultaneously raising awareness about this crippling disease. The year was 1938 when two African American children stood before a rundown farmhouse; one with deformed legs caused by rickets – their innocence tainted by its cruel touch. It served as a stark reminder that no one was exempt from its reach. As time went on and medical advancements emerged, rickets slowly faded into history's shadows. Yet these remnants remain – photographs capturing moments frozen in time, etching into our collective memory the struggles faced by countless individuals affected by this insidious condition.
