Rolls-Royce Armoured Cars of The RNAS - Middle East

Rolls-Royce Armoured Cars of The Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), developed in 1914 and used during the First World War as pictured here (possibly in Egypt). In September 1914 all available Rolls Royce Silver Ghost chassis were requisitioned to form the basis for the new armoured car. The following month a special committee of the Admiralty Air Department, among whom was Flight Commander T.G. Hetherington, designed the superstructure which consisted of armoured bodywork and a single fully rotating turret mounting a regular water-cooled .303-in Mk I Vickers machine gun. The armoured cars served on several fronts of the Middle Eastern theatre. Lawrence of Arabia used a squadron in his operations against the Turkish forces. He called the unit of nine armoured Rolls-Royces "more valuable than rubies" in helping win his Revolt in the Desert.

Napier Eland Convair 340 - 440 Mark II - Convair 440-62

Napier Eland Convair 340 - 440 Mark II (Convair 440-62) N440EL (msn 445) at PacAero Engineering Corporation, Santa Monica, CA. Built in 1957 and delivered to D.Napier & Sons Ltd., at PacAero waiting for conversion to the prototype Napier Eland Convair 340 - 440 Mark II, powered by 3,060 e.s.h.p. Napier N.El.1 Eland turboprop engines. After flight testing was completed the aircraft was delivered to Allegheny Airlines in 1959. When support for the Eland engines was withdrawn by Rolls-Royce, the aircraft was converted again, to CV-580 standard powered by Allison 501D-13 turboprop engines (civil T56). Registered in Venezuela as YV-59C during 1976, this aircraft was written off on 11 November 1977 at Juan V. Gomez International Airport, San Antonio del Tachira, Venezuela (Tachira). Date: 1957
