Samuel Hood, also known as Lord Hood, was a prominent figure in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in 1724 and passing away in 1816, he left a lasting impact on British society. One of his notable contributions was the creation of the Hood Service, a set of exquisite diningware made by renowned silversmith Paul Storr. The Entree Dish with Cover from this service, crafted in London around 1806/07, showcases the fine craftsmanship that characterized Lord Hood's taste. Another remarkable piece from the same collection is the Soup Tureen with Cover. Made in England during the same period as the previous item, it exemplifies Lord Hood's refined aesthetic sensibilities. The Sauce Tureen and Cover from the Hood Service further demonstrates his attention to detail and commitment to elegance. Created between 1807 and 1808 by Paul Storr, this piece adds sophistication to any table setting. While these artifacts reflect Lord Hood's refined tastes, they only scratch the surface of his multifaceted life. A lithograph portrait captures him at an older age but still emanating authority and wisdom. Lord Samuel Hood was not just known for his appreciation of art; he also had political influence. An engraving titled "A Scene at New Theatre Covent Garden" depicts a satirical portrayal of political hustings taking place in London's Covent Garden area back in 1784 – showcasing his involvement within British politics during that time. Political satire continued to surround Lord Samuel Hood as seen through Thomas Rowlandson's caricatures such as "Madam Blubber On Her Canvass, " "The Drum Major of Sedition, " "Madam Blubbers Last Shift or The Aerostatic Dilly, " "The Rival Candidates, " and "The Westminster Watchman. " These illustrations highlight both humorous commentary on contemporary events while simultaneously portraying Lord Samuel Hood’s role within them.
