Scarpelli Tancredi (1866-1937) was an Italian artist known for his captivating illustrations that depicted significant historical events. His works captured the essence of various moments in history, from ancient battles to modern conflicts. One of Scarpelli's notable illustrations portrayed the Battle of the Caudine Forks during the Second Samnite War in 321 BC. This battle saw the Roman army, led by consuls Tiberius Veturius Calvinus and Spurius Postumius Albinus, being humiliated and placed naked under the yoke by their Samnite captors, led by Caius Pontius. During World War I, Scarpelli depicted "the offensive of the Piave in June 1918, " which marked a significant turning point as it became the last offensive and great defeat for the Austro-Hungarian army. The Battle of Solferino and San Martino on June 24th, 1859, during the Italian Campaign also found its place among Scarpelli's creations. King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy played a crucial role during this battle. Scarpelli's talent extended beyond warfare scenes. He also illustrated key moments from Italy's rich history. For instance, he depicted Giuseppe Garibaldi entering Rome with his army in December 1848 during Risorgimento – a period characterized by Italy's struggle for unification. In another illustration taken from Paolo Giudici's "Storia d'Italia, " Scarpelli showcased Luciano Doria's death during the Battle of Pola in May 1379 amidst war between Genoa and Venice known as War of Chioggia. Count Lando leading The Great Company terrorizing northern Italian villages caught Scarpelli's attention too. Similarly, he immortalized Ezzelino III da Romano – an infamous condottiere who was captured by Guelfes during Pope Alexander IV's crusade against him in 1256.
