Close up of mould on bread
Box crab or shame-faced crab, Calappa granulata. Burrows in sand at depths of 13 to 400 m, common at depths of 30 to 150 m. Lives on Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean: from the Sahara to the coast of Portugal and Israel in the Mediterranean. The crab feeds on molluscs and Bivalves. Its large and powerfull formed forceps are well adapted to pick snails apart and are strong enough to crack the shells. The Shame-faced crab is very inactive, sometimes for several days it does not move. It can be found burrowed down in the sand with just obtruding eyes, antennae and upper parts of carapace and forceps. The large forceps will form a breathing cave behind them, thus hampering any sand running in. The crab, in its resting place is well camouflaged, very difficult to spot and it rarely moves. When it moves, it runs upright, straightening its slim legs and is quite quick. To bury itself, it drops down and presses it forceps against the ground, pushing itself backwards into the substrate. Turtle approaching surgical glove drifting in
Turtle approaching surgical glove drifting in the ocean. The glove looks like a jellyfish which is one of its common foods. The Covid-19 crisis has spurred rapid production of surgical masks, gloves, and other protective equipment. Those are desperately-needed plastic products; governments are racing to boost their stockpiles and regular citizens clamoring for their share of supplies. Such production is necessary, but a great part of plastic ends up traveling through sewers and waterways to the sea. Date: 13-05-2020
