"Seltzer: A Refreshing Elixir of the Past" Step back in time to 1938, where Casteix Pharmacy stood proudly on Dauphine Street in New Orleans. Captured by Frances Benjamin Johnston's lens, this snapshot transports us to an era when seltzer was a popular remedy. Before being unemployed, I was a striker - as depicted on the front cover illustration of Le Rire from January 14th, 1933. Little did I know that my path would intersect with the world of seltzer. Tarrants Seltzer Aperient takes center stage in these vintage advertisements engraved on pages after pages. The effervescence and medicinal properties of this elixir were highly sought-after during those times. Intriguingly, even American magazines and illustrators like Charles Dana Gibson embraced seltzer's charm. In his pen and ink drawing from 1900 titled "The only pebble on the beach, " we catch a glimpse of how deeply ingrained it had become in society. As history unfolded, World War Two brought rationing into play. Christmas dinners transformed into pill form – an unimaginable concept. Yet amidst it all, Olaf Carl Seltzer immortalized Native American warriors galloping through western landscapes with his watercolor masterpiece from 1906. Seltzer transcended boundaries - geographical and cultural alike - leaving its mark across different eras and continents. From pharmacies in New Orleans to magazine ads across America, its popularity soared high. Today, let's raise our glasses filled with sparkling water or perhaps some modern-day seltzers inspired by their predecessors' legacy. Let us toast to the enduring spirit of this fizzy concoction that has quenched thirsts throughout history.
