Sergey Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorsky (1863-1944): A Pioneer in Color Photography Born in Olonetsk, Russia, Prokudin-Gorsky's fascination with capturing the rich diversity of his empire led him to document various aspects of Russian and Central Asian life between 1905 and 1915. His collection includes images of a Type of Olonetsk man in Vytegra, the Church of the Resurrection on the Blood in Saint Petersburg, Sart schoolchildren in Samarkand, alternators made in Budapest, tea plantations in Chakva, Kareshka boat yard in the Russian Empire, more schoolchildren in Samarkand, Dagestani types, a street in Samarkand, another street of old Samarkand, the Bibi-Khanym mosque from Shakh-i Zindeh in Samarkand, and an Armenian woman in national costume in Artvin. Prokudin-Gorsky's color photography technique, which used three black-and-white photographs taken through red, green, and blue filters, paved the way for modern color photography.
