In the enchanting landscapes of Germany, a fascinating world of insects unfolds. Among them is the captivating short-horned fly, a creature that captivates with its unique features and behaviors. As we wander through the picturesque meadows of Baden-Wuerttemberg, we stumble upon a mesmerizing sight - a large bee fly known as Bombylius major delicately sipping nectar from an exquisite Aubrieta flower. Its vibrant colors and graceful movements make it truly remarkable. Moving on to the Ummendorfer Ried nature reserve in Upper Swabia, our eyes are drawn to another intriguing insect: the mayfly or shadfly. With its delicate wings shimmering in the sunlight, this ephemeral beauty reminds us of life's fleeting moments. Amidst fields adorned with yellow flowers stands the majestic Jerusalem Artichoke or Sunchoke. Here, we encounter yet another astonishing creature - the hornet mimic hoverfly. Resembling its dangerous counterpart but harmless itself, this female Volucella zonaria adds an element of mystery to these surroundings. Venturing further into Lower Saxony's Haren region reveals more wonders. The common yellow dung fly gracefully hovers over meadows while nearby, a Fly Orchid named Ophrys insectifera blooms elegantly amidst lush greenery. Our journey takes an unexpected turn when we come across a male common scorpion fly known as Panorpa communis. Its peculiar appearance and behavior leave us awestruck as it showcases its distinct mating rituals. Not far away lies Dioctria atricapilla -the violet black-legged robber fly- perched on a leaf like royalty surveying its domain. Its striking coloration serves as both camouflage and warning sign for potential prey. The buzzing sound catches our attention once again; this time it is Lucilia sp. , commonly known as the greenbottle fly.
