From the fields of 16th-century Europe to the vast landscapes of Western Canada, harvesting has always been a timeless tradition. The Harvesters by Pieter Bruegel the Elder captures the essence of hardworking farmers reaping their bountiful crops with meticulous precision. Fast forward to 1901, and we find ourselves standing on Banff Bridge, witnessing a farming scene in Western Canada where nature's beauty meets man's labor. In another era, Ferdinand I and his wife Anne of Bohemia and Hungary proudly pose amidst their harvest scene in 1620. Their children join them, showcasing a family united through farming traditions that have stood the test of time. Moving across continents to southeastern Georgia in 1939, Marion Post Wolcott presents us with a typical farm boasting newly harvested oats – an image that speaks volumes about rural life during this period. Dorothea Lange takes us further west to Sunset Valley, Malheur County in Oregon during the same year. Shocked corn stands tall against an FSA borrower's field - a testament to resilience despite economic hardships faced by many during this time. As we gaze upon Lange's photograph capturing corn shocks on yet another farm in Sunset Valley, we are reminded of both struggle and determination etched into every stalk. Stepping away from reality for a moment brings us back to Wittenham Clumps in 1913 - its pen & ink rendering offering an idyllic view over lush fields awaiting harvest season's arrival. Meanwhile, Leon-Augustin Lhermitte transports us to late-19th century France with The Harvesters; their stoic figures embodying dedication as they gather sheaves under golden skies. The South Coast comes alive through vibrant watercolors as harvesting commences in 1869 – each brushstroke capturing not only ripe crops but also the spirit of coastal communities reliant on agriculture for sustenance and livelihoods.
