The Purple Swamphen, also known as the swamp hen, is a fascinating bird that can be found in various locations around the world. In Gambia, during the month of February, an adult Purple Swamphen was spotted feeding in shallow water. Its vibrant purple feathers stood out against the serene backdrop of the wetland. Another sighting in Gambia captured an adult Purple Swamphen gracefully walking through shallow water. With each step, it seemed to glide effortlessly, showcasing its elegant movements. Hasties Swamp National Park became a temporary home for another subspecies of this magnificent bird - Porhyrio porphyrio melanotus. Here, an adult was observed confidently strutting on a mudflat. The contrast between its dark plumage and the light-colored mud created a striking visual display. In yet another setting, amidst aquatic vegetation and standing in shallow water, an adult pair of Purple Swamphens were seen together. Their presence added vibrancy to their surroundings as they blended harmoniously with nature's palette. A heartwarming moment unfolded when an adult Porhyrio porphyrio bellus was photographed feeding its chick while standing on grass in parkland located in Perth. This tender scene showcased parental care and nurturance within this avian species. Moving across continents to New Zealand during November brought about sightings of Pukeko - another name for Porphyrio porphyrio melanotus - standing proudly on short grass. Its distinctive blue plumage caught everyone's attention as it roamed freely. Traveling all the way to India led us to Keoladeo Ghana National Park (Bharatpur), where we witnessed different behaviors exhibited by these birds. An adult Purple Swamphen could be seen feeding on aquatic plants while immersed in wetlands rich with biodiversity. In that same location but among papyrus stems instead of aquatic plants stood another individual climbing up one such stem with remarkable agility and grace.
