Tammany, also known as Tammany Hall, was a powerful political machine in New York City during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was notorious for its corruption and control over city politics. The cartoon by Thomas Nast titled "Tweed Ring" is a scathing critique of the corrupt practices Hall's leader, William M. Tweed. The image depicts Tweed as a tiger on the loose, symbolizing his unchecked power and influence. In 1871, New York City witnessed riots during clashes between Tammany supporters and members of Orange Headquarters, a Protestant organization. These riots highlighted the deep divisions within the city's population and showcased how Tammany Hall could incite violence to maintain its grip on power. Tammany Hall itself was located on 14th Street in New York City. This building served as the headquarters for the political machine where backroom deals were made and favors exchanged for votes. The wood engraving titled "Playing Possum" from 1872 suggests that any truce or compromise made by Tammany Hall was merely a ploy to regain power. This highlights their cunning tactics to manipulate public opinion while continuing their corrupt practices behind closed doors. Tammany Bank played an important role in financing Tammany's operations. Created by Charles Moss in 1938 and Harry Grossen around 1937 respectively, these images show how financial institutions were intertwined with political machines like Tammany Hall. Another wood engraving from 1872 called "The Cat's-Paw - Anything to Get Chestnuts" portrays politicians using whatever means necessary to achieve their goals, even if it meant sacrificing principles or exploiting others for personal gain – much like what happened under Tammany's rule. Before George Waring Jr. 's reforms improved sanitation in New York City at the turn of the century, street cleaning fell under Tammany's control.
