"Tidelines: A Reflection of Our Impact on the Seas" The Gower Peninsula in West Glamorgan, Wales, witnessed a disturbing sight in March. Micro plastics invaded the tranquil pool, mingling with tiny nurdles and plastic debris scattered across the rockpool. Nature's beauty marred by human negligence. Further down the coast, Chesil Beach in Dorset, England faced its own battle against pollution. An unsightly blob of grease washed up on its shores alongside rancid vegetable oil amidst a sea of rubbish. The consequences of our actions laid bare for all to see. But amidst these distressing scenes, there were signs of life clinging to hope. Seaweed gracefully adorned Kimmeridge Bay's beach strandline in August while Common Starlings and Rooks found nourishment along Belfast Lough's shoreline during February. Even insects found solace among nature's remnants. Bristly-legged Seaweed Flies rested upon seaweed at Kimmeridge Bay in October while their counterparts feasted upon dead Mullet in September. And beneath driftwood on Broad Bench at Kimmeridge Bay lay Ligia oceanica - Sea Slates seeking refuge from their polluted surroundings. These resilient creatures remind us that life persists even when faced with adversity. Yet despite these glimmers of resilience, we cannot ignore the overwhelming presence of plastic debris strewn across Chesil Beach once more in April. It serves as a stark reminder that our actions have far-reaching consequences for both marine life and ourselves. Let us take heed from these tidelines; let them serve as an urgent call to action. We must strive towards cleaner oceans and sustainable practices if we are to preserve the fragile balance between humanity and nature before it is too late.
