In the Tudor Exhibition of 1890, visitors were treated to a stunning display of historical artifacts and artworks. Among the items showcased were exquisite engravings from Le Vocabulaire Illustre, featuring elegant pelerines and tippets that adorned fashionable women of the past. One particularly captivating piece was "Tippet and Muff" by Hans Mangelsdorf, created around 1938. This artwork depicted a woman wearing a luxurious fur tippet with intricate details that spoke volumes about her refined taste. The art world also celebrated feminine beauty through paintings like "Beautiful Betty, " an oil on canvas masterpiece that captured the essence of charm and grace in its subject. Similarly, "Mademoiselle Mars, " portrayed in litho form, immortalized a renowned actress whose allure captivated audiences during her time. Angelica Kauffmann's talent shone brightly as she skillfully painted a portrait miniature showcasing a lady adorned with a double sable fur tippet embellished with jeweled clasps. The attention to detail in this work was truly remarkable. Another painting titled "Study of a young woman with her hands in muff" evoked feelings of warmth and comfort as it depicted an elegant lady keeping her hands cozy within this fashionable accessory. Madame Jean Valade's pastel portrayal further emphasized the allure and sophistication associated with wearing such garments. Costumes from different eras also made their mark at the exhibition; hoods with liripipes, hose, short doublets or jerkins, and tall crowned hats transported viewers back in time to experience fashion trends from centuries ago. An English woman donning a silk hood and tippet from the seventeenth century stood alongside a Dutch lady sporting both fur tippet and hood - both images providing glimpses into historical styles that continue to fascinate us today.
