"Tronc d'arbre: Exploring the Symbolism of Nature and Justice" Nature has long been a source of inspiration for artists, with trees often symbolizing growth, strength, and wisdom. In the realm of justice, however, the depiction takes on a more intriguing tone. The marble bas-relief "Fascist justice: 'Justice sitting on the trunk of the Tree of Good and Evil'" in Milan's Palace of Justice transports us to 1936 Italy, where power dynamics intertwine with nature. Meanwhile, Jean-Honoré Fragonard's masterpiece "The Swing" captures a whimsical moment in history through oil on canvas. Amidst lush foliage and an enchanting swing set amidst a tree's branches, love is played out under watchful eyes - reminding us that even innocent moments can be subject to scrutiny. Moving back in time to c. 1865 Fontainebleau, we encounter Gustave Courbet's "The pave of Chailly. " This oil painting invites us into an idyllic forest scene where sunlight filters through towering trees onto a peaceful path below - inviting contemplation and escape from reality. In contrast to these serene depictions lies La Fontaine's engraving "The theft and the Donkey, " which humorously reminds us that even animals are not exempt from moral dilemmas. Similarly playful is Frederick Warne & Co. 's children's poem book illustration titled "Up a tree, " showing how climbing trunks becomes an adventure for young boys. La Fontaine returns with another fable in "The kite and the nightingale, " highlighting conflicts between different species as they navigate their place within nature’s hierarchy. These tales remind us that harmony can be elusive when competing interests collide. Shifting gears towards Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy series brings forth powerful imagery such as Pia de Tolomei conversing with Dante himself in Purgatorio Canto
