Building work at Piccadilly Circus in London, 1926, (1935). World's Busiest Roundabout - to simplify congestion of traffic in the main London thoroughfares, the "roundabout" system was instituted. The picture shows the new system in operation at Piccadilly, which at that time was undergoing many structural alterations. Apart from the new buildings in course of erection, a great new Underground station was then being constructed. The statue of Eros has been temporarily removed - it was replaced in 1931. From "The Silver Jubilee Book - The Story of 25 Eventful Years in Pictures". [Odhams Press Ltd., London, 1935]

The Workmens Train, 1872

The Workmen's Train, 1872. This picture shows steam trains at Gower Street station on the Metropolitan (underground) railway which opened in 1863. Workers hurry to catch their morning train to work. From London: A Pilgrimage by Gustave Dore and Blanchard Jerrold. (London, 1872). A Pilgrimage was a comprehensive portrait of London, but although the book was a commercial success many of the critics disliked it. Several were upset that Jerrold and Dore had concentrated on the poverty that existed in London
