Turkish soldiers have long been the subject of artistic depictions, capturing their presence and impact in various historical events. From the notes of a journey that took us from Philippopolis to Shipka via Kezanlik, we witnessed the resilience and strength of these soldiers etched into engravings. The massacre at Erzeroum left a haunting black and white photograph that serves as a reminder of the horrors faced by both Armenians and Turkish soldiers. In another lithograph, we witness an intense fight between Armenians and Turkish soldiers at the Imperial Ottoman Bank, showcasing the complexities of conflict within society. Moving away from Turkey's borders, our artistic journey takes us to Crete where we explore its majestic mountains through engravings. Amongst these landscapes, they can seen interacting with Tartar children in Eupatoria – a glimpse into their daily lives amidst war. The Graeco-Turkish War unfolds before our eyes through vivid lithographs depicting scenes in Crete. We witness not only battles but also blockades and occupations that shaped history. The Cretan revolt is captured in striking detail as insurgents fire upon imperial forces above Kyrtounado village – an image filled with tension and resistance. Venturing further into Herzegovina, we encounter Turkish soldiers felling trees on Mount Karaula during wartime - showcasing their resourcefulness amidst adversity. In another engraving, they bring prisoners back - highlighting both sides' involvement in this conflict-ridden region. Through artistry spanning different mediums such as engravings, photographs, and lithographs; these glimpses into the world provide us with insights into their experiences throughout history. They serve as reminders of bravery, tragedy, resilience, and humanity amid times of turmoil.
