Tussilago farfara, commonly known as coltsfoot, is a beautiful and unique plant that captivates both humans and animals alike. As I observe nature's wonders, I spot a red squirrel hanging down from a willow flower branch, its tiny paws gripping the delicate stems. The sight of this agile creature upside down amongst the willow branches brings a smile to my face. Curiosity takes hold as the red squirrel leans in to smell a coltsfoot flower nearby. Its keen sense of smell detects the sweet aroma emitted by these vibrant yellow blooms. It seems even wildlife appreciates the allure of Tussilago farfara. The beauty of coltsfoot has been captured throughout history in various forms of art. A colour lithograph showcases Colt's-Foot, Tussilago Farfara in all its glory, while an engraving by Lambert Junior depicts every intricate detail from leaf to root. Leonhart Fuchs' illustration from De historia stirpium commentarii immortalizes this herbaceous perennial with precision and grace. Eugene Blery's depiction of Large Coltsfoot in 1843 reminds us that this plant has stood the test of time, thriving amidst changing landscapes. In deciduous forests, coltsfoot coexists harmoniously with woodruff (Galium odoratum), creating a picturesque scene where nature thrives. Flowers have long been celebrated for their diverse properties and uses; dandelion, caraway, elderflower garlic - each possessing unique characteristics like our beloved coltsfoot. Ginger root adds spice to life while coltsfoot brings forth its own distinctive charm. In Groningen, The Netherlands, I stumble upon another enchanting moment –colstfoots flowering up close against a backdrop of lush greenery. Their radiant petals seem to dance under the sun's gentle rays. Colt’s foot or not? That is indeed the question.
