Vine weevils (Otiorhynchus sulcatus), not to be confused with the company, are notorious garden pests. Their damage is evident in the curled and notched edges of herb leaves, a telltale sign of their nocturnal feeding. Below the surface, their larvae wreak havoc, decimating plant roots. In the soil, observe the larvae's white, C-shaped bodies and distinct brown heads, arranged in a 'C' pattern when viewed from above. Up close, their tiny feet reveal intricate structures under SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope). The battle against vine weevils often involves the use of nematode worms, such as Steinernema carpocapsae and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora, as natural enemies. These nematodes are effective predators, hunting down vine weevil larvae and releasing bacteria that kill them. Under the SEM, observe the nematodes' slender bodies and distinctly serrated tail tips, ready to strike. The war against vine weevils continues, with growers and scientists collaborating to find new solutions to protect their crops and maintain healthy gardens.
