The viverridae family is a diverse group of carnivorous mammals that includes fascinating species such as the suricate or meerkat. These small creatures are known for their incredible sentry skills, keeping watch for predators while their young ones stay close by. Preying mainly on arthropods and reptiles obtained through digging, they thrive in open and arid landscapes like the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in South Africa's Northern Cape. One notable member of this family is the Rasse, scientifically known as Vivericula malaccensis. This elusive creature has been captured on paper, showcasing its unique features and characteristics. Another captivating image from history takes us back to London Zoo in November 1912 when a fossa was photographed in black and white. Artistic depictions also play a role in understanding these animals. A watercolor painting by Sydney Parkinson from the 18th century showcases a male Viverra nasuta, while a colored engraving by Sidney Parkinson portrays a female of the same species. Other members of the viverridae family include the large spotted genet found in Elephant Plains within Sabi Sand game reserve and the brown or Jerdonas palm civet residing in Western Ghats, Karnataka, India. Traveling further east to Southeast Asia brings us to Palawan Island where we find an intriguing Palawan Binturong captured on camera. Meanwhile, Kenya's Mount Kenya National Park provides stunning night-time shots of both adult rusty-spotted genets yawning and sitting on beams. Lastly, we have an adult small-spotted genet calling out into the night while standing confidently on a branch in Castilla y Leon, Spain during November. These glimpses into different species within the viverridae family highlight their beauty and diversity across various habitats around the world.
