"Exploring the Enigmatic West: A Glimpse into Westerners' Influence in Japan" Step back in time to the 19th century, when Japan's doors were cautiously opening to the world. These captivating prints from renowned ukiyo-e artists offer a fascinating glimpse into encounters with "westerners, " or gaijin, as they were known at that time. The series begins with "Foreign Words (Ikoku kotoba), " created by Utagawa Yoshiiku in 1860. This artwork captures the curiosity and intrigue surrounding foreign languages and their impact on Japanese society. Hiroshige II also invites us eastward with his work titled "China and Russia (Nankin, Oroshiya).
