"Wilfred: The Town Crier of St Marys, Scilly Isles" In the midst of picturesque St Marys, a small island in the enchanting Scilly Isles, resided a beloved figure known as Wilfred. With his booming voice and traditional attire, he embodied the spirit of an old-world town crier. As if plucked from history books, Wilfred's presence was reminiscent of a bygone era. His daily proclamations echoed through narrow streets and quaint cottages, announcing important news and events to eager townsfolk. But there was more to Wilfred than just being a town crier. In 1912, during the ill-fated Terra Nova expedition led by Captain Robert Scott, an artist named Herbert Ponting captured a poignant image titled "The Officers of the Terra Nova. " Among them stood Wilfred - a testament to his adventurous spirit. However, fate had its own plans for this remarkable man. A tragic incident occurred when he ran into a Teller Mine that left him scarred but undeterred in his dedication to serving his community. Beyond his duties as town crier, Wilfred found solace in animals. At Herne Bay carnival, he proudly paraded with Pip, Squeak and Wilfred - three adorable pets adored not only by him but also by readers of The Daily Mirror. During World War II's tumultuous times came another role for our resilient hero. He joined the ranks alongside tanks from the 3rd and 4th Sharpshooter units while women war workers sculpted their way into history under Clare Sheridan's skillful hands. Amidst it all stood R. N. M. D. S. F Station at St Anthony in Newfoundland where fitters provided local protection while Witley Station witnessed their move to Westbury - adapting with unwavering determination.
