EDITORS COMMENTS
Abandoned Cafe in Carey, Texas, 1937: A poignant snapshot of a bygone era, this photograph by renowned American photographer Dorothea Lange captures the desolate scene of an abandoned cafe in the small Texas town of Carey. The cafe, once a bustling hub of activity, now stands as a derelict and boarded-up building, a victim of the Great Depression that was sweeping across the United States during the 1930s. The once proud Coca-Cola sign, now faded and peeling, hangs forlornly above the entrance, a testament to better times. The wooden exterior, weathered by the elements, is now covered in a thick layer of dust and grime. The cafe's office, with its timber walls and wooden floor, is now empty and silent, the only sound coming from the gentle rustling of the wind through the dry grass outside. The town of Carey, like many others during this period, was fast becoming a ghost town of the Texas plains. Dorothea Lange, working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later the Office of War Information (OWI), captured this image as part of her documentation of the effects of the Depression on rural America. This photograph is a powerful reminder of the economic hardships faced by many during this period and serves as an important piece of American heritage art.
