Abbot Elfnoth, 1020-1050, (1910)

Abbot Elfnoth, 1020-1050, (1910). A 19th-century depiction after an 11th-century manuscript, showing Abbot Elfnoth (died 980 AD) presenting his book of prayer to St Augustine. Augustine is represented as an archbishop wearing the pallium over a chasuble, the high collar seen being probably the amice. Under the chasuble is a dalmatic with wide sleeves, the two ends of the stole appear beneath the dalmatic, the widening of the ends is characteristic of the Saxon period. Elfnoth also wears chasuble, dalmatic, amice (ornamental collar) and alb (robe). Illustration from British Costume during 19 Centuries by Mrs Charles H Ashdown, (London, 1910)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a 19th-century depiction of Abbot Elfnoth presenting his book of prayer to St Augustine. The scene is based on an 11th-century manuscript, showcasing the rich history and religious significance behind this momentous event. St Augustine, portrayed as an archbishop, wears the pallium over a chasuble, with a high collar that is likely the amice. Beneath his chasuble, he dons a dalmatic with wide sleeves, while the two ends of his stole peek out from beneath it - a characteristic style of the Saxon period. Abbot Elfnoth mirrors St Augustine's attire by wearing similar ecclesiastical garments such as the chasuble, dalmatic, amice (ornamental collar), and alb (robe). Both figures exude reverence and devotion through their clothing choices and gestures. The illustration comes from "British Costume during 19 Centuries" by Mrs Charles H Ashdown in 1910. It beautifully depicts medieval England's religious customs and showcases how fashion played an integral role in expressing one's faith during that time. This portrait not only highlights Abbot Elfnoth's generous act but also provides insight into medieval Christian practices. It serves as a reminder of our rich cultural heritage and invites us to appreciate the artistry involved in capturing historical moments through visual mediums like this stunning print.
