EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the ancient Greek city of Pergamon, now known as Bergama in modern-day Turkey. The artist, O Schulz, skillfully reconstructs the magnificent Acropolis of Pergamon in this detailed illustration from 1902. From left to right, we can see a series of impressive structures that once adorned this archaeological site. The Temple of Faustina and the Temple of Caracalla stand proudly side by side, showcasing the grandeur and devotion of ancient Greek religion. Further along, we encounter the Traianeum, a testament to the architectural brilliance of its time. The theater and library are also prominent features within this bustling cityscape. These buildings not only served as places for entertainment but also as centers for knowledge and education. As our eyes wander through this monochrome landscape, we come across more sacred spaces such as the Temple of Athena and Dionysus' temple. Each structure tells a story about religious practices during that era. Finally, nestled amidst these remarkable edifices is a bustling market where commerce thrived among locals and visitors alike. This print is an invaluable historical document captured by Dr H F Helmolt for his book "The World's History". It allows us to appreciate both the architectural marvels created by our ancestors and their significance within society at large.
