EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, showcases Nakamura Nakazo I in the role of Kudo Saemon Suketsune in the Kabuki play "Sakai-cho Soga Nendaiki," performed at the Nakamura Theater in the First Month of 1771 in Japan. The Edo Period (1603-1868) print is a stunning example of the Katsukawa School's artistic mastery. Nakamura Nakazo I, dressed in the character's traditional attire, is depicted standing confidently before a grille, his expression exuding a sense of determination and mischief. He wears a vibrant green kimono, accessorized with a hosoban robe and a pair of geta sandals. The intricate design of his clothing is further accentuated by the contrasting colors and patterns. Of particular note are the actor's distinctive footwear – a pair of carriage boots, or katsukawa yusuke, with a bold, red and black design. The boots, along with his green color woodblock print, are reminiscent of the fictional character Hidetsuru, adding an additional layer of intrigue to the image. The print's composition is from a multisheet design, highlighting the meticulous attention to detail and the skillful use of color and form. This work of art is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan and the enduring legacy of its artistic schools.
