EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned artist Shunsho, depicts Segawa Kikunojo III in the role of Lady-in-Waiting Suho, disguised as Tsunokuniya Tsuna, in the Kabuki play "Shitenno Tonoi no Kisewata," performed at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1781 in Japan. The Edo Period (1603-1868) masterpiece showcases the actor's exceptional talent in the art of cross-dressing, a common practice in Kabuki theatre. The print, which is part of the Katsukawa School, displays the intricacies of the actor's costume. Suho's disguise includes a beige and black kimono, accessorized with a hosoban obi (narrow belt), and a colorful, patterned under-kimono. The actor's face is painted with a subtle, feminine makeup, and his hair is styled in a traditional female wig. The print also features the influence of Hamamuraya Roko, a popular Kabuki playwright, and Katsumiyagawa Yusuke, a famous Kabuki actor. The dramatic expression on Kikunojo III's face, combined with the intricate details of his costume, highlights the theatricality and artistic skill of the Kabuki tradition. This stunning work of art, which is now housed in the Art Institute of Chicago, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Japan and the captivating world of Kabuki theatre during the eighteenth century.
