EDITORS COMMENTS
This woodblock print, created by the renowned Japanese artist Shunsho, showcases Segawa Kikunojo III in the role of Lady Shizuka (Shizkua Gozen) disguised as Tamazusa in the Kabuki play "Chigo Torii Tobiiri Kitsune," performed at the Ichimura Theater in the eleventh month of 1777. The Edo period (1603-1868) print is a masterpiece from the Katsukawa School, which was known for its innovative and expressive style. Lady Shizuka, a character from the "Tale of Genji," is depicted in this print wearing a stunning hosoban kimono, a narrow-width kimono with a bold, colorful design. The intricate pattern of the kimono, featuring vibrant browns and reds, is expertly rendered in the traditional color woodblock printing technique. The actor's face is expressive and full of emotion, conveying the drama and intrigue of the character's disguise as Tamazusa, a man. The print also showcases the elaborate details of the actor's costume, including the intricately designed obi sash and the traditional wooden sandals (waraji) worn with the kimono. The setting of the print is the entrance to a gate, with a figure, possibly Hamamuraya Roko, standing to the side, adding to the sense of anticipation and excitement. This print is a testament to the rich artistic traditions of Japan during the eighteenth century and the skill of the actor Segawa Kikunojo III in bringing the character of Lady Shizuka to life on the Kabuki stage. It is a valuable addition to any collection of Asian art or theater history.
