EDITORS COMMENTS
In this woodblock print from the eighteenth century, two renowned Kabuki actors, Ichikawa Danzo III as I no Hayata Tadazumi, and Matsumoto Koshiro II as Osada no Taro Kagemune, are depicted in a scene from the play "Nue no Mori Ichiyo no Mato," performed at the Nakamura Theater in the eleventh month of 1770. The print, created by the master artist Shunsho, showcases the actors' intricate costumes and dramatic poses. Ichikawa Danzo III, on the right, is dressed in a vibrant green hosoban robe, adorned with intricate patterns and a bold, colorful sash. He holds a katana sword in his left hand, ready for action. His intense expression and confident posture convey the strength and determination of his character. Matsumoto Koshiro II, on the left, is dressed in a more subdued outfit, with a simple, dark robe and a white undershirt. He wears a traditional Kabuki makeup, which enhances the dramatic effect of the print. His character, Osada no Taro Kagemune, is shown with a serious expression and a determined look in his eyes. The print is a testament to the artistic school of Katsukawa, which flourished during the Edo period in Japan. The use of color woodblock printing techniques adds depth and texture to the image, bringing the characters and their story to life. The print is a valuable heritage piece, showcasing the rich history of Japanese theater and fashion during the eighteenth century. This image offers a glimpse into the world of Kabuki theater, a unique and important aspect of Japanese artistic and cultural heritage. The intricate details of the actors' costumes, the bold use of color, and the intense expressions on their faces make this print a true masterpiece.
